Hendersons, one of Edinburgh’s best-known vegetarian restaurants, has opened a new venue in Glasgow’s Southside.
The restaurant brings the bright colours and distinctive yellow exterior of the Edinburgh institution to Pollokshaws Road, offering a spacious private dining area, a bar, and a welcoming environment for both people and dogs.
The Glasgow opening marks a personal homecoming for owner Barrie Henderson. His grandmother, who was born in Glasgow, opened the original Hendersons restaurant in Edinburgh in 1962. Born and raised in Glasgow, her influence continues to shape the business today, with several of her original recipes still appearing on the menu.

‘My gran, who started Hendersons over 60 years ago, was from Glasgow, so bringing the business back to her home city feels incredibly special,’ Barrie said.
‘We’ve been made so welcome by the local community already and can’t wait to finally open the doors. Hendersons has always been about great food and sustainability, as well as making everyone feel welcome, and it feels like the perfect place to start this next chapter.’
Chef Anna Czapiewska is leading both the Edinburgh and Glasgow kitchens. Originally from Poland she developed her passion for food through her two grandmothers before starting her culinary career in Scotland. Her cooking focuses on vegetarian and vegan dishes, with an emphasis on seasonal produce, fermentation, and foraging.

When I visited the new Glasgow opening I particularly enjoyed the broad bean guacamole with crispy chilli, king oyster mushroom scallops with a stunning salsa verde, the charred padron peppers and the sweet potato wedges, with a lime and garlic cashew cream, harissa butter and toasted pumpkin seeds.
They are also serving up their famous Hendersons haggis (just as good as the real thing) with root mash, whisky tarragon cream and caramelised red onion. The lion’s mane mushroom steak with cider and green peppercorn sauce, topped with crispy kale was also delicious.

Wherever possible, Hendersons has worked with local suppliers and chosen to restore rather than replace. For the interiors, existing chairs were reupholstered by Altered Image instead of buying new furniture, and the venue’s signage was hand-painted by Bungo Signs.
Cupar studio Gloam created dried floral installations for the venue in place of artificial flowers. The choice gives the space a natural feel and complements Hendersons’ character and focus on sustainability.
