Eating Out with Niall Munro from Birch, Inverness

Eating Out with Niall Munro from Birch, Inverness

Not sure where to eat in Inverness? We catch up with Niall Munro from Birch to get his top recommendations from around Inverness, and find out where else he loves to eat around Scotland.

The best place to get dinner:

My favourite place for dinner is actually found just outside of Inverness, in Fortrose. A great little spot called IV10, which serves lots of delicious small plates and pizzas, all cooked in a wood-fired oven. It’s a real gem in the Highlands.

The best place to get a cocktail:

The Malt Room

The Malt Room is a cracking little bar, with an amazing range of whiskies too. It’s very small, but it has a great atmosphere about it.

The best bakery in Inverness:

Bakhoos – another spot in Fortrose – is a real asset to Inverness and the Black Isle, with lots of amazing viennoiseries and sourdough options served daily. Their savoury baguettes are top tier!

The best place to get a coffee:

Roots in Inverness serve some tasty brews, using Papercup (a roastery in Glasgow) as their coffee supplier. Grain & Grind are also a solid option, with lots of different beans on offer.

The place you are desperate to try:

I haven’t been to Station Road in Fort Augustus in a few years, and I would love to get back there at some point soon. They are always doing wonderful things in the culinary world, utilising some of the finest produce we have around us here in the Highlands.

Your best meal in Scotland in the last year:

Edinbane Lodge.

Both Scorrybreac Restaurant and Edinbane Lodge on the Isle of Skye have been standouts for me over the last few months. Both are at the forefront of the fine dining scene, both on the island and further afield.

Birch is a speciality coffee shop and eatery based in Portree on the Isle of Skye with a coffee shop in Inverness. Set up by Niall Munro in 2020, Niall was inspired by trips to coffee mecca, Melbourne and wanted to replicate the Melbourne café style, but with beautiful, locally sourced products from the Scottish Highlands and Islands.
