Head Chef at Michelin Star Cail Bruich in Glagsow, David Scott shares some of his favourite places to eat and drink around Scotland.
Your favourite restaurant:
If we’re talking ‘fine dining’, I had a great time at Edinbane Lodge on the Isle of Skye last year for my birthday, and one of the best meals I’ve had recently is at The Glenturret Lalique Restaurant in Crieff, it really is next level.

The best place to get a cocktail:
Glasgow is full of great bars for cocktails so I’m really spoiled for choice here, but I think I’ll keep it within staggering distance for me and go for Rascal in Glasgow. Small and cosy, relaxed service with a really creative cocktail menu and they’re great at the classics too.

The best place for a special occasion:
The Glenturret Lalique Restaurant in Crieff. I was lucky enough to be given a very generous voucher from some of the chefs I worked with before I moved to Glasgow last year. In my opinion, it’s the best restaurant in Scotland at the moment. Marks’ cooking is so sharp and everything is delicious, yet it stays fun and doesn’t take itself too seriously. Top level pastry work, the chocolate millefeuille is one of the best desserts I’ve ever had and the Petit four serving is as unique as it comes. Some pretty nice glassware too.
The best bakery:
The one I go to most is Cottonrake in Glasgow, they do a wide selection of really great pastries. I had a great Flan parisien there the other day, silky smooth with plenty of vanilla. I love their croissants and their rye bread, it makes for a great after work sandwich. The one next door to Cail Bruich also does a good breakfast.

The best place to get a coffee:
The Good Coffee Cartel in Kinning Park, Glasgow. They roast their own beans and serve it really well. I actually have a subscription from them so they send me two different freshly roasted variety’s every week. My Kitchen porter, James, is an absolute coffee fanatic and he’s adamant the best coffee in the city is at Zennor but I haven’t been yet.

The place you are desperate to try:
Falls by Orry Shand in Banchory. We recently did a Great British menu collaboration at Cail Bruich with Lorna’s dessert from 2019 and Orry’s Nightcrawler dish from this season. Orry’s food was very unique with clear flavours and the cooking of the meats and fish couldn’t be better. Falls is clearly destined for the very top of the Scottish food scene

The best place you’ve had a meal recently:
Big Counter on Victoria Road in South Glasgow. I moved up to Glasgow a year ago and I’ve wanted to go for ages but only just got round to going. A relaxed restaurant that focuses on the food and warm service, highlights include the mussels swimming in chilli butter and a particularly good steak tartare.
